The Place of In Between

becoming a mom

I have the best job in the world.

For some, it may be up for debate, but for me, I’m as sure as ever. This thing I get to call a career is inexplicably rewarding; the truest form of passion.

For years I settled for jobs that worked for the time being. And they were fine. And I enjoyed them, sometimes. But something lacked. Something bigger than myself was missing.

And then this doula-thing fell into my lap. It’s an odd journey how I got to this point, but I got to it nonetheless.  This one’s the keeper.

I get the incredible opportunity to see women in this magical state of in between. Lingering between woman and mother. Finding themselves in this new role while hanging on to who they are at their core.  I see fathers and partners learning to love their lovers in a whole new fashion.  Uninhibited, unbridled.  To see their loved one sacrifice so much of themselves to bring their child into the world.  Their eyes are opened and heart prepared for this new dynamic in their family.

I see mothers struggle and fight to settle into parenting.  To learn to let go of the unimportant and hang tight on to what is.  To overcome the bumps in the road during this tricky transition. Crying when it’s hard. Rejoicing when they’ve endured.

We doulas have a special place in this delicate but empowering transition of birth and postpartum. We are a trusted guide, a warm hand to hold, and a shoulder to cry on.  A safe haven for honest frustration and pure joy.

No two journeys the same, no two families the same.

And at the end of the day, we carry the strength of these women with us to each family we serve.  Proving that it, indeed, can be done.

So, I thank these families for the invitation into their space of in between, as they find their footing among this rocky but exhilarating road.  Your endurance and strength to push forward inspires me and the many families we will continue to serve.  Your trust in me, as your doula, is an honor I could never adequately show gratitude for. So, I give you my heartfelt, sincerest thanks for allowing me to do what I love, day-in and day-out.  For allowing me to support you and your loved ones at a time that is so special for you. Thank you.
