Stifling Confidence

pregnancy questions

Some of our first interactions with clients, especially first time parents, looks something like this: they ask a few questions, apologize for asking said questions, and then say “I just feel so stupid about everything.”

At what point did seeking out knowledge and information become something to be embarrassed about?  Why do these inquisitive parents-to-be feel that somehow their thirst of answers to is something to be apologetic for? Questions about childbirth, labor, postpartum and this whole transitional period is something we wholeheartedly welcome. In fact, we encourage it. Why?

Because when we know what lies ahead of us, that is where confidence flourishes.

When a laboring woman is uninhibited, focused, and completely trusting in the process, a strong prominent confidence overtakes. When her questions are answered and she understands her body and the journey, it gives her an opportunity to allow her instincts to take charge.  She is confident. She is at peace.

So we say loud and proud:

Ask your questions.

Get thorough answers.

Feel confident and bold and unafraid.

As doulas, we will never make you feel ashamed for the questions you ask. We want you to know that, when you’re speaking with us, you’re in a judgement-free zone.  We embrace your questions. We help you find answers. And we encourage you to keep asking them.  Because we know that when your questions are answered, your confidence is no longer stifled.
